‘English-only’ English medium instruction: Mixed views in Thai and Vietnamese higher education

Emerging from the growing body of work on English medium instruction (EMI) in higher education are challenges to policy implementation, particularly when it is implemented top-down without a careful needs analysis or fails address problems associated with ‘English-only’ implementation and so-called ‘native speaker’ norms. Our study responds this need by exploring role EMI classrooms. We draw data collected 17 universities Thailand Vietnam using questionnaires 1,377 students, 83 teachers for academic purposes (EAP), 148 content teachers, as well interviews 35 31 EAP 28 teachers. also 14 focus groups students at seven Vietnam. Findings reveal differences attitudes amongst stakeholders highlight that L1 classrooms Vietnam, albeit used sparingly, useful pedagogical tool. Overall, however, participants preferred native-accented experience abroad, English-only instruction. This calls more research into raising awareness Global Englishes translanguaging practices challenge such attitudes, university language policies, teacher recruitment seem reflect native-speakerism discourage bilingual use classes.
